I've been following 45Drives for quite a while now, particularly through their collaborations with some of my favorite tech YouTubers like Lawrence Systems, Level1 Techs, Techno Tim, and others. If you haven't heard of them yet, you're in for a treat. They've been doing some amazing work making open-source solutions a viable option for both home labs and enterprise environments (essentially competing against Dell, HP and others without the proprietary nonsense).
I've actually been in conversations with the 45Drives team over the past few months, and let me tell you, they've been cooking up something special. On December 5th, 2024 (yes, I know I'm a bit late sharing this - life's been hectic!), they announced their new division: 45Professional.
What's 45Professional All About?
This new division is fascinating because it's specifically designed for MSPs serving small and medium-sized businesses. Think of it as the perfect middle ground between their existing offerings. They're launching with some really practical configurations - 4, 8, and 15-bay servers, available in both rack-mount and desktop versions.
What really caught my attention is their feature set:
- They've pre-configured all the open-source goodies
- There's this cool new SnapShield feature for ransomware protection
- They've put serious thought into power efficiency and noise reduction (crucial for smaller offices)
- Everything's managed through their Houston Interface, which I've heard great things about
The 45Drives Ecosystem
What I love about 45Drives is how they've structured their divisions to cater to different needs:
45Drives Enterprise
This is their original powerhouse division. If you've heard of their Storinator series, that's their flagship product here. But what's really interesting is their Proxinator line - it's perfect timing with all the VMware migration discussions happening. I've seen several enterprises successfully break free from vendor lock-in using their solutions.
45Homelab
This is where many of us probably first encountered 45Drives. They've really nailed the sweet spot between professional-grade hardware and home-friendly design. What impresses me most is how they've built a community around these products - it's not just about selling hardware, it's about enabling enthusiasts to learn and grow.
Looking to the Future
What excites me most about their roadmap is:
- They're developing stackable systems for tight spaces
- A new customer portal is in the works
- They're doubling down on the Home Lab and MSP space while still looking at the EnterpriseProxinator
My Take
Having watched 45Drives evolve, this move into the MSP space feels like a natural progression. They're essentially taking what worked well in their enterprise and homelab divisions and crafting something specifically for MSPs. It's like they're building bridges between the open-source world and traditional business IT needs.
I'm particularly excited about how this could change the game for smaller MSPs who want to offer enterprise-grade solutions without the enterprise-grade pricing and vendor lock-in.
What are your thoughts on this expansion? Are you an MSP considering open-source solutions? Or maybe you're running a homelab and curious about their professional offerings?
Also if you have not already done some consider picking up a copy of my book, the Cybersecurity Architect's Handbook!
P.S. I've got some interesting discussions planned with the 45Drives team in the coming months, so stay tuned for more in-depth coverage!
